Speaker: Beverly Gordon
"The Push-Pull of the Doily and
Related Fancywork"
Dr. Beverly Gordon, has spent her professional career studying and teaching about the importance of design and textiles on human history and culture. Professor Emeritus of the UW School of Human Ecology, Dr. Gordon started her career as a fiber artist, and worked in museums as an exhibit curator and textile interpreter. During her 30 years as a professor in the Design Studies Department at the UW-Madison, she taught classes relating to “our designed environment,” including fashion and textile history, world dress, the impact of design on global culture and “design thinking and problem-solving.” Her research interests have led to numerous publications, with more than 60 full-length books, scholarly articles and other publications to her credit. Her publications have discussed topics as varied as feltmaking, the meaning of souvenirs, American Indian bandolier bags and women’s fundraising fairs.
