       Introduction to Sock Darning

Extend the life of your handknit socks
by learning to patch holes and worn areas

Instructor:  Ada Lai
Location: E.D.Locke Library,McFarland,WI

Required advance work:1-2 stockinette swatches (20 sts by 30 rows).  Bind off swatch.  We will cut holes in the swatches to repair. NOTE: recommend that swatches are done in DK or worsted and that darning yarn be same weight (or close) to that used for the swatches.  Any wool or wool-blend will work .,  It also works well if swatches are done in lighter color and that the  darning yarn is different color from the swatch.

Optional:  one hole-y sock. If a hole-y sock is used, bring an appropriate yarn for darning--NOT the sock yarn, but a 100% wool yarn (preferably not superwash) --fingering, sport or DK weight.

Supplies:  Bring these to class:

  1. 100% wool for darning (the concept is to have the darning yarn be able to ":felt" a bit as the sock is worn after darning--to strengthen the repair site)
  2. Yarn needle (preferable with bent tip)
  3. Scissors
  4. Darning egg (if have one)
  5. Optional: small pinnable board (small blocking board or mat, or small corkboard) and pins to pin down the swatch and to stretch it out.
  6. Optional: eyeglasses for close-up work
