Modular Knitting with Negative Space - Olga Buraya-Kefelian

In this class students will learn a technique for working and creating negative spaces modular style without breaking off the yarn or working intarsia. They will learn how to translate the shape, calculate, and master knitting it in class while swatching one of the provided shapes.  Students can later practice by making a Ten-Ten Wrap design (this pattern isn't part of the class).

Skills needed: know how to knit, cast on, bind off, increase, decrease.

Skills learned:

  • Several types of stretchy cast on methods
  • How to create negative spaces in knit fabric continuously
  • How to balance the knit fabric while adding the negative spaces
  • How to create various shapes of negative spaces
  • How to make the right yarn and stitch pattern choice when working patterns with negative space.

Materials:

  • 200 yds of worsted weight yarn in several colors. Bring preferably light and bright colors of the bouncy, smooth, non-fuzzy yarn for swatching
  • US 4 (3.5 mm), US 5 (3.75 mm), US 6 (4 mm) needles
  • OPTIONAL: Ten-Ten Wrap pattern - Ravelry or olgajazzy.com
    • This pattern is not required for the class but is a recommended pattern using the techniques students will learn. Purchase before end of September to get 20% off with code FALL20 on either website.
